Critical value report and timely treatment for patients safety
Yum Ho-Kee

Abstract
To assure patient safety in healthcare, the timely treatment is essential when the test results reveal significantly abnormal or critical. If the critical value report (CVR) was delayed or not recognized by ordered doctor, it may cause the life threatening condition and litigious accident. The explicit notification, follow-up, and reaction for critical values may cause avoidable morbidity and mortality. Based on literature review, systemic approaches and development of technology can improve communications to decline on delayed recognition and report by healthcare providers. The well designed evidence-based timely notification systems of laboratory and imaging studies get better and more patient safety. Safety first! When we start up the national systems for patient safety by law, we have to consider and research the current nationwide situation, system, and culture of patient safety step by step. First of all, adopting the CVR system in hospitals, the reporting system for patient safety should include the basic concepts of voluntary, confidential, non-punitive, and learning goals.
